Mariah Carey opened up to PEOPLE Magazine about her health and how she has been battleing bipolar II disorder. According to the interview she was first diagnosed in 2001, but has been apparently dealing with this disorder for years prior.

“Until recently I lived in denial and isolation and in constant fear someone would expose me,” Mariah explains. “It was too heavy of a burden to carry and I simply couldn’t do that anymore. I sought and received treatment, I put positive people around me and I got back to doing what I love… writing songs and making music.”

Mariah is currently in therapy, and she’s taking medication for bipolar II disorder which may involve periods of depression and Hypomania.
